My Neighbor Totoro" 30th anniversary
Totoro,30
All aboard! The Catbus is here to take us back in time as "My Neighbor Totoro" is returning to theaters this year to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The film is still considered to be one of the best pieces of work by Oscar-winning animator Hayao Miyazaki, and the titular character has withstood the test of time to become Studio Ghibli's most iconic mascot.
According to media reports, Studio Ghibli is hoping that "My Neighbour Totoro" will be their first theatrical release in China.
"We've already sold the rights to 'My Neighbor Totoro' to our Chinese partner SCLA, but there are various processes they have to go through to release it in China; it's in their hands now," said The Hollywood Reporter, citing a spokesperson for Studio Ghibli's foreign sales department.
If everything goes well, Chinese fans will likely be able to see the film, which has recently been digitally restored, on the big screen toward the end of 2018.
In 1950s Japan, two young sisters, Satsuki and Mei move into a new house in the countryside with their father Tatsuo Kusakabe, in order to be closer to their mother who is recovering from an illness at a nearby hospital.
One day, four-year-old Mei discovers three spiritual creatures of the forest, and names the largest one - a gigantic, waddling ball of fur who especially likes roaring – "Totoro", a mispronunciation of the Japanese for "troll".
Totoro, according to Miyazaki's setting, is a furry forest creature that adults cannot see. He never normally interacts with humans, but enjoys spending time with the sisters.
A classic scene from "My Neighbor Totoro" happens when the two sisters are waiting for their father's bus on a dark and stormy night, but they grow worried when he isn't there. As they get increasingly concerned, Totoro shows up, with a lotus leaf on his head as an umbrella. Satsuki offers him the extra umbrella she prepared for her father and teaches him how to use it.
Delighted with the shelter, as well as the noise made by falling raindrops on the umbrella, the woodland creature roars with joy. In return, Totoro gives the sisters a leaf-wrapped package of seeds and departs in the dark riding a bus-shaped cat.
Tatsuo shortly after arrives, only to see his little girls get all excited about having seen Totoro.
In an interview Miyazaki did back in 2014, he said that his intentions for the film were actually to show his gratitude and love towards Japanese nature, something he has neglected for a long time and decided to bring it on to the film.
Thanks to his whimsical imagination, his love and respect for nature was beautifully handled in "My Neighbor Totoro."
One night, Satsuki and Mei awaken to discover Totoro and his two miniature friends in their garden performing a ceremonial dance around the planted seeds. The sisters join them in the dance and are amazed to see the seeds quickly grow into a giant tree.
The girls wake up the next morning to find the tree has disappeared. However, the seeds have indeed started to sprout.
"It's something we have forgotten, something we have not noticed, something we thought that has long been lost – yet I still believe it exists today," wrote Hayao Miyazaki in the prospectus for "My Neighbor Totoro."
Pulitzer-winning film critic Roger Ebert once commented: "Whenever I watch it, I smile, and smile, and smile."
A lot of people believe that Miyazaki's animations are not really created for children, but rather, for adults. "My Neighbor Totoro" certainly appeals to kids, who perhaps share the same innocence with the big furry forest creature that everybody loves, but it also resonates worldwide with its adult fans who regain a little of their childhood wonder that gets lost with maturity.
